My Meditations for Christmas 2012

John 18:37
...to this end was I born...
Christ's Humanity
He presented pure humanity to God.
He brought manhood to heaven.

...for this cause came I into the world...
Christ's Deity
He presented perfect Deity to man.
He brought Godhood to earth.

The Conception in the Womb
...was I born...
* He Who inhabits eternity (Isaiah 57:15) dwelt in space (Matthew 1:20; Luke 1:31) and time (Matthew 2:2).

The Coming into the World
...came I into the world...
* Only Christ could come into the world (contrast with John 16:21 - everyone else was born into it) because He existed before the foundation of the world with the Father (John 16:28).
* The Father sent and Christ came willingly (contrast John 3:17 with John 3:19; 1 John 4:9 with Hebrews 10:5).
* The usage of the phrase "into the world" is mainly found in John's gospel and mainly describes Christ either coming or being sent into the world which is no surprise as John's emphasis is the Son of God who existed from the beginning (John 1:1-3).

The Characteristic of the Witness
...that I should bear witness unto the truth...
* Christ is the truth (John 14:6)
* Christ is full of truth (John 1:14)
* Christ manifests the truth (John 8:40,45 - words; Psalm 33:4 - works)

The Challenge for the Willing
Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.
* Are you of the truth?
* Are you hearing His voice (John 10:27; Revelation 3:20 contrast with Song of Solomon 5:2-3)?

Beneath Thy Cross

Am I a stone, and not a sheep,
That I can stand, O Christ, beneath thy cross,
To number drop by drop Thy Blood's slow loss,
And yet not weep?

Not so those women loved
Who with exceeding grief lamented Thee;
Not so fallen Peter weeping bitterly;
Not so the thief was moved;

Not so the Sun and Moon
Which hid their faces in a starless sky,
A horror of great darkness at broad noon--
I, only I.

Yet give not o'er,
But seek Thy sheep, true Shepherd of the flock;
Greater than Moses, turn and look once more
And smite a rock.

Resting

Once my hands were always trying,
Trying hard to do my best;
Now my heart is sweetly trusting,
And my soul is all at rest.

Once my brain was always planning,
And my heart, with cares oppressed;
Now I trust the Lord to lead me,
And my life is all at rest.

Once my life was full of effort,
Now 'tis full of joy and zest;
Since I took His yoke upon me,
Jesus gives to me His rest.

Ruth Chapter 4

1 Cor 1:30-31
Boaz is a beautiful picture of Christ as our Redeemer.

Our Redeemer is:
Willing
·          Ruth 4:6 - The nearer kinsman said he cannot redeem when in actual fact, he will not because he was afraid it would mar his own inheritance.
·          The Lord Jesus is willing to redeem us (compare with Matt 8:2-3; John 10:18 and contrast with 2 Pet 3:9).

Able
·          Ruth 4:9-10 - We see that Boaz was able to redeem all including Ruth.
·          In Ruth 2:1, Boaz is described as “a mighty man of wealth” or “a man of good standing”. The description would include wealth, virtue and strength (Strong’s).
·          The Lord Jesus is able to redeem us (Eph 2:4 – wealth; 1 Pet 1:19 – virtue; Heb 7:25 & Jude 24 – strength).

Sacrificial
·          When we compare Ruth 4:6 and Ruth 4:10, we see that Boaz was not concerned about his own inheritance nor was he concerned about his reputation for redeeming a Moabitess.
·          The Lord Jesus is sacrificial to redeem us (2 Cor 8:9; Phil 2:6-7; Jn 10:11).

Gracious
·          The 5 occurrences of the description “Ruth the Moabitess” in the book is not by accident. In Ruth 4:10 we see that Boaz emphasizes the roots of the woman he is taking to wife. He is gracious towards the one who is condemned (c.f. Deut 23:3).
·          The Lord Jesus is gracious to redeem us (Eph 1:6; 2:5-7; 3:8).

Ruth Chapter 3

The Counsel (Ruth 3:1-4)
The Compliance (Ruth 3:5-7)
The Consequence (Ruth 3:8-18)

There are things we can learn regarding our behaviour when we come into the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ from Ruth being in the presence of Boaz:
The preparation to enter into the presence (Ruth 3:3)
The punctuality when entering into the presence (Ruth 3:3)
The place when entered into the presence (Ruth 3:4)
The purity when enjoying the presence (Ruth 3:5-14)
The provision from entering into the presence (Ruth 3:15-17)
The promise when exiting the presence (Ruth 3:18)

Two items of clothing found in the chapter:
Boaz's 'skirt' (Ruth 3:9) - speaks of protection, promise, possesion (cf. Ezekiel 16:8)
Ruth's shawl (Ruth 3:15) - speaks of provision

Everlasting Love

Did He love me when I lay
Dead in trespasses and sins!
Is there, then, no time, no day
Where this wondrous love begins?
No! The Lord who died for thee
Loved thee from eternity.

Doth He love me even now,
Though my faith and hope are dim?
Will He still regard His vow
When I've broken faith with Him?
Yes! He loves thee still the same
As when thou didst love His name.

Will He love me all the way,
'Spite my wayward, selfish will?
O, if I again should stray -
Tell me, will He love me still?
Yes! Thy failures can but prove
His eternal, changeless love.

Lord, how long I've striven in vain,
Resting not on Love Divine!
Now I know it doth remain
Changeless 'spite each change of mine.
Perfect, peerless, deathless, free
Is Thy love, O Lord, to me.

New Year

O, year by year we well may be
Deep exercised in soul to see
Just what is chaff and what is wheat,
As valued at the judgment seat!

Look DOWN into the deep dark pit,
Whence we were digged - O think of it!
Look BACK - we only render praise
For grace attending all our ways.

Look OUT upon the fields so white-
The gladsome harvest just in sight!
Look UP - the objects of God's love
Are fed with manna from above.

Look ON - for glory is in view,
And Jesus waits to welcome you!
But do not ever look WITHIN,
Upon the wretched source of sin.

How bright the coming days would be,
If only souls from self were free,
And had the mind and heart absorbed
With CHRIST alone - their glorious Lord!

Thoughts for the New Year

A lot happens during the first month (Abib) of the Jewish religious calendar. Three feast out of seven takes place in the first month and from these feasts, we can take a few things to heart as we enter into a brand new year.

The Passover (Exodus 12:1-14; Leviticus 23:4-5)
- A reflection of the past occurs
The Sufficiency of Christ in our lives (Exodus 12:4-6; 1 Corinthians 5:7)
We reflect on the year that has passed and ask ourselves, have we found Christ to be sufficient?

The Feast of Unleavened Bread (Exodus 12:15-20; Leviticus 23:6-8)
- A renewal for the future occurs
The Separation of Christ from sin (Leviticus 2:4-5,11)
We renew our walk for the year to come and ask ourselves, have we become more Christ-like?

The Feast of Firstfruits (Leviticus 23:9-14)
- A returning in the present occurs
The Satisfaction Christ brought the Father (1 Corinthians 15:20)
We return to the Lord what is rightfully His and ask ourselves, have we pleased the Father the way Christ did?
